New and updated collections now available on the Library of Congress website:
Frederick Douglass Newspapers
This
online collection presents newspapers edited by Frederick Douglass
(1818-1895), the African American abolitionist who escaped slavery and
became one of the most famous orators, authors, and journalists of the
19th century. The presentation includes 568 issues from three newspaper
titles (Frederick Douglass’ Paper, New National Era, and The North
Star), covering the years from 1847-1874.
American Federation of Labor Records
The
records of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) span the years
1883-1925 and consist of 355 letterpress volumes of correspondence of
Samuel Gompers (1850-1924) and William Green (1870-1952), presidents of
the organization, and by other officials; each volume contains an index
of correspondents. Comprising approximately 328,445 images digitized
from previously produced microfilm, the collection is a treasure trove
of labor history.
