Fördergeber, Universitäten und Bibliotheken drängen seit Jahren
auf einen freien Zugang zu wissenschaftlichen Publikationen. Während mit
immer mehr großen Verlagen Open-Access-Abkommen ausverhandelt werden,
waren kleinere Verlage bislang in den Debatten zur
Open-Access-Transformation kaum vertreten. Wir befragten daher Vertreter
von 82 kleinen und mittelständischen Wissenschaftsverlagen zu ihren
Erfahrungen, Einstellungen und Angeboten zu Open Access. Es zeigte sich,
dass Open Access für diese Verlage und ihre Autoren wichtiger wird,
allerdings bestehen abhängig von Verlagsgröße, Fachbereichen und
Literaturtypen deutliche Unterschiede bei Einstellungen und Kenntnissen
bezüglich Open Access. Zentrale Anforderungen für eine
Umstellung ihrer Publikationstätigkeit auf Open Access sind für Verlage
ausreichende Finanzierung, mehr Standardisierung sowie eine bessere
Zusammenarbeit und Kommunikation mit anderen Stakeholdern.
Open Access from the Publishers’ Point of View. Results of a survey among scholarly publishers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland
Funders, universities, and libraries have been pushing for Open Access to scholarly publications for years. While Open Access agreements have been negotiated with a growing number of big publishers, smaller publishers hardly figured in the debates on the Open Access transformation so far. We therefore interviewed representatives of 82 small and medium-sized scholarly publishers about their experiences, attitudes and offers on Open Access. Our survey shows that Open Access is becoming more important for these publishers and their authors, although there are clear differences in attitudes and knowledge regarding Open Access, depending on their size, subject areas, and literature types. For publishers, key requirements to convert to Open Access are sufficient funding, more standardization, and better communication with other stakeholders.
