hand. Illuminated manuscripts were among the most precious objects
produced in the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance, primarily in
monasteries and courts. Society’s rulers–emperors, kings, dukes,
cardinals, and bishops–commissioned the most splendid manuscripts.
